A World at War

World War II touched nearly every part of the globe, from the beaches of Normandy to the islands of the Pacific. The United States entered the fight after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, and the tide in Europe turned decisively with the Allied invasion of Normandy in June 1944. Less than a year later, Germany surrendered, and Japan followed after atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

Building a New World Order

The war's end didn't mean the world simply returned to normal. The United Nations was founded in 1945 to prevent future global conflicts, and Nazi leaders faced justice at the Nuremberg trials for crimes committed during the war. Colonial empires also began to crack, with India winning independence from Britain in 1947.

The Cold War's Opening Moves

• The Marshall Plan funneled US aid into rebuilding Western Europe's economies.
• Israel was established as a state in 1948.
• NATO formed in 1949 to counter Soviet influence in Europe.

By decade's end, a new conflict, cold rather than hot, was already taking shape.
