Amphibians have a trick most other animals never mastered: living two completely different lives in one lifetime, usually starting underwater and finishing on land. This quiz covers the frogs, toads, salamanders, and lesser-known caecilians that pull off that transformation.

Metamorphosis is the defining amphibian trick, but not every species finishes the job. Axolotls famously stay in their aquatic, gill-bearing form for their entire lives, a trait called neoteny that has made them a favorite subject for regeneration research.

Not All Amphibians Look Like You'd Expect

When people picture amphibians, caecilians rarely come to mind, and that's exactly the problem. This limbless, burrowing group is often mistaken for worms or snakes, despite being just as legitimately amphibian as any frog. A few other things worth knowing:

• Amphibian skin plays a real role in breathing, which is part of why they're so sensitive to pollution
• Most amphibian eggs lack a hard shell, tying many species permanently to water for reproduction
• The Goliath frog of Central Africa can grow to the size of a small housecat

It's a group full of extremes, from the tiniest frogs on Earth to amphibians that never really grow up at all.
