From Republic to Empire

Rome began as a republic governed by elected officials and a powerful Senate, a system that lasted for centuries before ambitious generals and political crises paved the way for one-man rule. Julius Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March marked the beginning of the end for the Republic, and his adopted heir Augustus became Rome's first emperor.

Engineering an Empire

Roman engineers built the infrastructure that held their sprawling territory together.

  • An extensive road network connected distant provinces to the capital
  • Aqueducts carried fresh water across long distances into cities
  • The Colosseum hosted gladiatorial games for tens of thousands of spectators

Peace, Peril, and Decline

The Pax Romana brought roughly two centuries of relative stability across the empire, even as volcanic disaster buried Pompeii and emperors like Hadrian fortified distant frontiers. Eventually, internal strain and outside pressure caught up with Rome, and the deposition of its last western emperor in 476 AD closed the book on an empire that had lasted for centuries.
