Chess descended from an Indian game called chaturanga before traveling through Persia and into Europe. Along the way, one piece got a dramatic promotion: the queen, once one of the weakest pieces on the board, was transformed into its most powerful during a European rules shakeup in the late 1400s, sometimes called the "Mad Queen" reform.
