Nothing in nature exists in isolation. Every organism is tangled up in a web of relationships with its neighbors, its food sources, and its physical surroundings, and ecology is the branch of biology dedicated to untangling exactly how those connections work. This quiz covers the vocabulary ecologists use to describe it all.

From Populations to Ecosystems

Ecologists work at several different scales at once. A population is every member of one species in an area, a community adds in all the other species sharing that same space, and an ecosystem folds in the non-living environment too, from rainfall to soil chemistry.

  • Producers, mostly plants and algae, convert sunlight into usable energy.
  • Consumers, from herbivores to top predators, get their energy by eating other organisms.
  • Decomposers break down dead material and recycle nutrients back into the system.

Relationships, Roles, and Ripple Effects

Not every species in an ecosystem carries equal weight. A keystone species can have an outsized influence on everything around it, and removing one can trigger a cascade of unexpected changes. Meanwhile, relationships like mutualism, where both partners benefit, show that competition isn't the only strategy that works in the wild.
