Measuring Risk

Conservation groups like the IUCN track extinction risk using categories ranging from 'near threatened' all the way to 'extinct.' A species listed as 'extinct in the wild' survives only in captivity, in zoos, breeding centers, or sanctuaries, with no wild population left at all.

The Usual Threats

Nearly every endangered species on the list faces some combination of the same pressures:

• Habitat loss from development and deforestation
• Poaching for tusks, scales, or horns
• Climate change disrupting food sources and breeding cycles
• Invasive predators in isolated ecosystems like island habitats

Small Wins, Long Roads

Not every story is bleak. Giant panda populations improved enough to shift their status from 'endangered' to 'vulnerable' in 2016. Captive breeding programs, anti-poaching patrols, and habitat protection have pulled more than one species back from the edge, even when the work takes decades.
