For centuries, Japan was governed not from the emperor's throne but from the household of a military ruler, backed by a warrior class bound by a strict code of honor. This quiz explores the shoguns, samurai, and daimyo of feudal Japan.
Shoguns, Daimyo, and the Samurai Code
While Japan's emperor retained ceremonial authority, real political power for centuries rested with the shogun, a military ruler who governed on the emperor's behalf. Beneath the shogun, regional lords called daimyo controlled their own domains, each protected by samurai warriors sworn to serve them.
- Samurai lived by Bushido, a code emphasizing loyalty, discipline, and honor.
- The katana, a curved single-edged sword, became the samurai's signature weapon.
- A samurai without a master was known as a ronin.
Unification and Isolation
After a long period of civil conflict, a succession of powerful warlords, including Oda Nobunaga, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and finally Tokugawa Ieyasu, gradually unified Japan under central control. The Tokugawa shogunate that followed ruled for over two and a half centuries and enforced a policy of near-total isolation from the outside world known as sakoku. Stories from this era, like the tale of the 47 Ronin, remain touchstones of Japanese culture today.
