From Estates-General to Revolution

The Revolution's roots lay in a financial crisis that forced King Louis XVI to convene the Estates-General in 1789 for the first time in over a century. When representatives of the common people found themselves shut out of negotiations, they broke away, swore the Tennis Court Oath, and set in motion a chain of events that culminated in the storming of the Bastille that July.

The Terror and Its Aftermath

Within a few years, the Revolution had radicalized. Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, were executed in 1793, and Maximilien Robespierre oversaw a period of mass executions known as the Reign of Terror, targeting perceived enemies of the revolution before Robespierre himself was executed in 1794.
