Vertebrates get most of the attention in nature documentaries, but they're actually a small minority of animal life. The overwhelming majority of species on Earth, from octopuses to earthworms to the insect buzzing near your porch light, never developed a backbone at all.

This quiz covers eleven of the strangest and most successful body plans invertebrates have come up with.

Boneless but Far From Simple

Just because an animal lacks a spine doesn't mean it lacks sophistication. Octopuses solve puzzles, remember faces, and run three hearts pumping blue blood through their bodies. Cephalopods in general are proof that intelligence doesn't require a vertebral column, just a very differently organized nervous system.

The Architects and the Regenerators

Some invertebrates build the world around them, while others simply refuse to stay damaged. A few standouts:

• Coral polyps construct reef structures that can be seen from space over enough centuries
• Starfish can regrow lost arms, and in some species even regrow an entire body from a single limb
• Earthworms constantly till and aerate soil, quietly making agriculture possible

It's a reminder that most of the planet's biodiversity was figured out long before anything ever needed a skeleton.
