Psychology Trivia
8 questions ยท Answer correctly to boost your score.
Psychology is one of those fields where the vocabulary has quietly leaked into everyday conversation. People talk about their "triggers," their "conditioning," and their cognitive biases without necessarily knowing which researcher spent a career studying the concept. This quiz traces that vocabulary back to its source.
You'll cover the couch-and-notebook era of early psychoanalysis, the lab-and-lever era of behaviorism, and a handful of mental shortcuts your brain uses whether you've studied them or not.
Two Very Different Ways to Study a Mind
For much of the twentieth century, psychology split into camps that barely spoke the same language. One tradition wanted to dig into the unconscious, dreams, and childhood memory. Another wanted nothing to do with any of that and insisted on studying only what could be observed and measured: behavior, stimuli, and responses.
Both approaches produced ideas that outlasted the arguments between them, and both show up in this quiz in the form of the researchers who defined them.
The Brain's Favorite Shortcuts
A lot of modern psychology is less about therapy and more about explaining why perfectly reasonable people make oddly predictable mistakes. We favor information that confirms what we already believe. We feel real discomfort when two of our own beliefs contradict each other. We sometimes get better just because we believe we're being treated, even when the treatment itself is inert.
None of these quirks are flaws exactly โ they're mental shortcuts that usually work, except when they don't.
- Confirmation bias makes disagreeing evidence easy to ignore.
- Cognitive dissonance is the discomfort of holding two conflicting beliefs at once.
- The placebo effect shows how expectation alone can influence real outcomes.
- IQ tests were designed to put a single number on a famously hard-to-measure thing: intelligence.
