The Eye as a Living Camera

Light first passes through the cornea, which does most of the heavy lifting when it comes to focusing, then through the lens, which fine-tunes that focus by changing shape — a process called accommodation. The iris acts like a camera's aperture, widening or narrowing the pupil to control how much light gets through.

Rods, Cones, and the Blind Spot

Once light reaches the retina, two kinds of photoreceptor cells take over.

  • Rods — far more numerous, tuned for dim-light and motion detection, no color
  • Cones — responsible for color and fine detail, concentrated in the fovea
  • Optic nerve — carries the signal to the brain, creating a small blind spot where it exits the retina

When Focus Goes Off

Not every eye focuses light exactly where it should. In myopia, images form in front of the retina, blurring distant objects; in hyperopia, the opposite happens. Color blindness, most commonly a red-green variety, comes from a different kind of mismatch — a missing or altered cone pigment, carried on the X chromosome, which is why it shows up far more often in men.
