The Silk Road wasn't one continuous highway but a web of overland and maritime routes linking China to Central Asia, the Middle East, and eventually Europe. Trade expanded significantly during China's Han Dynasty, and merchants moved goods in stages, with camel caravans crossing deserts and mountain passes between hub cities like Samarkand.

Ideas Traveled With the Goods

Along with silk, spices, and precious metals, the Silk Road carried religions, languages, technologies, and even diseases across the Eurasian landmass. The Mongol conquests of the 13th century briefly unified much of this territory under one rule, a period sometimes called the Pax Mongolica, which made travel safer and trade more direct. Marco Polo's famous journey along these routes later helped introduce Europeans to the wonders of the Mongol and Chinese courts.
