From Colony to Battleground
Vietnam's war grew out of decades of struggle against French colonial rule, led in large part by Ho Chi Minh's communist movement. When the country split into a communist north and an American-backed south, the stage was set for a conflict that would draw in hundreds of thousands of US troops over the following decade.
Turning Points
Certain moments changed both the trajectory of the war and how the public back home understood it.
- The Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 opened the door to direct American escalation
- The 1968 Tet Offensive shook American confidence in the war's progress
- The Ho Chi Minh Trail kept supplies flowing south despite relentless bombing campaigns
An Uneasy End
By the early 1970s, mounting casualties and domestic protest pushed Washington toward withdrawal. The Paris Peace Accords formally ended US involvement in 1973, but fighting between north and south continued until Saigon fell in 1975, reuniting the country under communist rule.
