The Anatomy of an Eruption

Volcanologists have a precise vocabulary for what's really just rock finding a way out.

• Magma is molten rock while it's still underground; it's called lava once it reaches the surface.
• A caldera forms when a volcano's summit collapses into the emptied magma chamber below.
• Tephra refers to the rock fragments and ash ejected during an explosive eruption.
• A shield volcano, built from fluid lava flows, has gentle slopes rather than a steep cone.

Eruptions That Changed History

Some eruptions did more than reshape a mountain. Mount Vesuvius buried Pompeii in 79 AD, freezing a Roman city in time for archaeologists to uncover centuries later. Krakatoa's 1883 eruption was heard thousands of miles away and cooled global temperatures for years afterward. With around 130 active volcanoes, Indonesia has more than any other country on Earth, sitting squarely on the Pacific's volcanically active "Ring of Fire."
