The Instruments That Read the Sky

Long before satellites, meteorologists were already measuring the atmosphere with surprisingly simple tools. A barometer tracks air pressure, and pressure changes are one of the best early warnings a storm is on its way. An anemometer measures wind speed, spinning faster as gusts pick up.

These instruments, refined over hundreds of years, are still the backbone of modern forecasting, just paired now with radar and computer models.

One Storm, Many Names

The same violently rotating storm system gets a different name depending on where it forms. In the Atlantic and eastern Pacific, it's called a hurricane. In the western Pacific, the identical phenomenon is a typhoon. Elsewhere, it's simply a cyclone.

Tornadoes are a different beast entirely โ€” smaller, faster to form, and defined by a violently spinning column of air reaching from a storm down to the ground rather than a massive rotating system out at sea.
